Magento 2 webshop development means the planning, build and ongoing operation of a webshop based on an open-source, enterprise-grade ecommerce platform. Magento 2 is developed by Adobe and is primarily suited to businesses that manage thousands of products, sell in several languages or currencies, or need complex pricing and B2B features. An implementation costs between €5,000 and €170,000 net and takes from 3 weeks to 9 months, depending on the size of the system and the number of integrations. Magento 2 requires a dedicated Magento VPS server and regular maintenance. In return, it gives you a webshop that supports your growth for years without having to switch platforms.

Why is Magento 2 one of the most powerful ecommerce engines for larger webshops?

Magento 2 is a robust, enterprise-grade webshop engine, maintained by an international developer community and used every day by tens of thousands of webshops worldwide. Since its acquisition by Adobe, its long-term support has been secured. Magento2 is a complex ecommerce platform that provides a stable foundation for high-traffic webshops handling thousands or even hundreds of thousands of products.

One of the biggest advantages of Magento 2 is its excellent customisability and feature-rich core. A multilingual, multi-country, multi-currency webshop can be managed from a single admin panel, even running on a single server. The platform natively supports advanced pricing, promotions, permission management and scalable operation.

Although it was originally built for large enterprises, with the right optimisation and configuration it is also an accessible and sustainable long-term solution for small and medium-sized businesses. Magento2 is the ideal choice for those who are not looking for a template webshop, but for a future-proof webshop platform that can grow with them and keep pace with new technologies and business needs.

02 / Decision point

Who is the Magento 2 webshop platform for?

Magento 2 is a webshop platform recommended primarily for medium-sized and larger businesses, where the main concern is no longer just getting started, but long-term stability, scalability and operational reliability.

Implementing Magento 2 costs more than simpler webshop engines: its initial development and infrastructure requirements are higher, and configuring it properly takes expert knowledge. However, this investment pays off in the long run, because a well-built Magento system rarely needs major redevelopment later and runs stably and reliably for years.

Magento 2 is the ideal choice if you:

  • work with a large product range (from thousands to hundreds of thousands of products),
  • need fast performance even under high traffic,
  • plan to sell in multiple languages across several countries,
  • use complex pricing, permission management or B2B features,
  • plan for the long term rather than switching platforms every year.
When another solution is better

Who is the Magento 2 webshop platform not recommended for?

Magento 2 is an extremely powerful and flexible webshop engine, but it is not the ideal choice for every business. In some cases other solutions can be more efficient, quicker to implement and more cost-effective.

Magento 2 is not recommended if:

  • You are starting with a limited budget. Magento 2 comes with higher initial costs: development, a VPS server, maintenance and expert support are all required. On a small budget this can be a disproportionate burden.
  • You need a quick webshop that launches with minimal setup. If you want to go live within a few days, with few products and basic features, Magento may be too complex.
  • You work with a small number of products and low traffic. With a few dozen or a few hundred products, most of Magento's capabilities remain unused.
  • You have no capacity for regular maintenance. Although a well-built Magento system is stable in the long term, it needs periodic updates, version tracking and technical supervision.
  • You want simple administration without a technical background. The Magento admin panel is powerful and clean, but more complex than those of simple webshop engines, so it may take some training.

If, however, you want a webshop on a smaller budget with a quick launch, other solutions are worth considering:

01 / WooCommerce

For smaller webshops with simple needs, built on WordPress.

02 / PrestaShop

For medium-sized shops, with a faster launch.

03 / Custom development

For special business logic where off-the-shelf systems are not enough.

Magento 2 is not the cheapest solution, but it is one of the most stable and future-proof webshop platforms. It is for those who are serious about selling online and are looking for a platform that supports growth rather than limiting it.

Where does your webshop stand right now?

What is Magento?

Magento is a high-performance, open-source webshop engine developed by Varien, with its first version released in March 2008. The platform quickly became an industry standard for complex, scalable e-commerce solutions.

Over its history Magento came under the ownership of eBay, then in 2015 it was acquired by Permira, which developed the Community (free) and Enterprise (paid) editions further as Magento Inc. In 2018 Adobe acquired the entire platform, which has operated under the name Adobe Commerce ever since.

With a history of more than 15 years, continuous updates, strong corporate backing and wide integration options, Magento is an ideal choice for medium-sized and large webshops.

Popular Magento modules and custom module development

One of the greatest strengths of Magento is its extensive modular architecture: ready-made, proven extensions are already available for the most commonly used features. Among other things, they cover payment solutions, shipping methods, invoicing, marketing, SEO and analytics.

If a webshop needs bespoke behaviour or special business logic, that is no obstacle either: by developing custom Magento modules, the system can be tailored precisely to the needs of the business. Our team has already built many in-house Magento modules that run stably, scalably and reliably over the long term in Magento webshops. Some of our completed projects can be seen on the Magento case studies page.

Magento's module system lets your webshop run tailored to your business goals instead of being built on compromises. Whether you use ready-made extensions or bespoke development, well-chosen and professionally implemented modules give a Magento webshop long-term stability, extensibility and a competitive edge.

Magento 2 development and webshop builds

Building a Magento webshop is not a matter of choosing a template but of mapping business processes into code. That takes a Magento 2 developer team that knows not only the platform but also the specifics of the Hungarian market: NAV Online Számla e-invoicing, local payment gateways, courier pick-up points, Árukereső and Google Shopping feeds. WebPot DEV handles the entire Magento 2 development process, from the first assessment to ongoing operations.

What does a Magento 2 developer do?

A Magento 2 developer's work goes well beyond customising the look of the shop. The platform is modular: every custom business requirement is implemented in a separate module, so that the webshop survives later version upgrades. That is why an experienced Magento developer never rewrites core files but hooks into the system through plugins, observers and preferences – keeping the Magento 2 webshop upgradable for years.

Day-to-day work typically spans three layers: on the backend, PHP module development and data modelling; on the frontend, Luma or Hyvä themes and checkout customisation; and on the infrastructure side, tuning Varnish, Redis, OpenSearch or Elasticsearch and the deployment process. On top of that come the integrations: invoicing software, ERP, inventory management, couriers, tracking and marketing channels.

Building a Magento webshop step by step

A well-run Magento 2 development project is predictable: every stage ends with a tangible result you can sign off. This is where most webshop projects go off track – not in the coding, but in unclear expectations. With us, building a Magento webshop is split into six stages, from the initial assessment to ongoing maintenance, with a time estimate for each stage – you will find the detailed breakdown in the project process section.

Important: the price of building a Magento 2 webshop is determined not by the design but by the number of integrations and the condition of the data to be migrated. Cleaning up a messy old database is often more work than the import itself.

When do you need a Magento 2 developer, and when not?

Magento 2 pays off when there is something substantial to build on it. Thousands of products, multiple warehouses, complex pricing, B2B permissions, several languages or currencies, your own business logic – in these cases the limits of SaaS platforms already cause measurable lost revenue, and investing in bespoke Magento development is worthwhile.

For a simple shop with a few dozen products, however, Magento 2 is oversized: the server requirements and maintenance costs will not pay for themselves. In that case WooCommerce or a SaaS system is the more honest recommendation, and we tell you so during the assessment – the wrong platform is a loss for both sides.

How much does a Magento 2 webshop cost?

Implementing a Magento 2 webshop typically costs between €5,000 and €170,000 net, depending on whether it is a shop built on standard foundations, a bespoke build or a multi-country system that also uses B2B features. The price is driven mainly by the number of products, the volume of data to migrate, the number of integrations and the bespoke business logic, not by the design. Ongoing maintenance is billed separately, as a monthly fee. Every project is scoped individually and agreed with you – the bands below are for guidance, not a quote.

What drives the price?

The same sentence – “I would like a Magento 2 webshop” – can mean a €7,000 project or a €70,000 one. The difference comes down to these factors:

  • Number of products and attribute complexity – 500 simple products and 50,000 products with variants are an order of magnitude apart.
  • Volume and quality of the data to migrate – cleaning up a messy legacy database is often more work than the migration itself.
  • Number of integrations – every payment provider, courier, invoicing software and ERP means a separate round of development and testing.
  • Custom checkout and business logic – the default Magento checkout is where most custom requirements land.
  • Multistore, multiple languages, multiple currencies – every additional store and language adds operational and content overhead.
  • ERP and warehouse system connection – two-way stock and order synchronisation with fault tolerance.
  • Depth of design – a customised ready-made theme or a fully bespoke frontend.
  • Performance target – staying within the Core Web Vitals thresholds on a large catalogue is a job in its own right.
  • State of the existing system – when taking over a half-finished or neglected project, the health check is a phase of its own.

The bands above are net prices and for guidance only. Every project is scoped individually and agreed with you; for enterprise-scale implementations beyond the top band we provide an individual quote.

How does a Magento 2 project work?

Six stages from the initial assessment to ongoing maintenance. The durations shown apply to a medium-sized implementation; some stages may partly overlap.

1

Assessment and quote

1–2 weeks

We review your product catalogue, your pricing and inventory logic, the integrations you need and the state of your existing system. From this we prepare a written quote with specific deadlines and a price. This stage decides whether Magento 2 really is the right choice – and if it is not, we tell you here.

2

Architecture and server environment

1 week

We size the VPS based on the expected catalogue size and traffic, configure the caching and search layers (Varnish, Valkey or Redis, OpenSearch or Elasticsearch) and set up the staging environment. The decisions made here determine whether the shop can handle the load later on.

3

Core system and data migration

2–6 weeks

Installation, branding and category structure, then migrating products, variants, customers and past orders. We set up 301 redirects for the old URLs so that your search rankings are not lost. The bulk of the work is usually not the import itself but cleaning up the old database.

4

Connecting integrations

2–5 weeks

Payment providers (Barion, SimplePay, Stripe, PayPal), couriers with pick-up points (GLS, FoxPost, MPL), invoicing software with NAV Online Számla reporting and, where needed, an ERP or warehouse system connection. Each integration is a separate development and testing cycle, which is why the number of integrations drives the timeline.

5

Performance, testing, tracking

1–3 weeks

Core Web Vitals tuning (LCP, CLS, INP), load testing for the expected peak traffic, finalising the indexing and caching strategy, and setting up tracking – Google Analytics 4, server-side tracking and conversion tracking. Without this the shop still runs, but you cannot tell how well.

6

Go-live and maintenance

ongoing

Switching over to live operation, training your team on the admin panel, then an ongoing maintenance arrangement: security patches, version upgrades, monitoring and bug fixing. A Magento 2 system stays stable for years only if this stage is not skipped.

Magento 2 optimised  VPS hosting and server solutions

Why is a VPS server essential for a Magento 2 webshop?

Magento 2 is a resource-intensive, enterprise-grade webshop engine that was not designed for shared hosting. Stable and fast operation requires dedicated resources, an optimised server environment and fine-tuned settings. This is exactly what a properly configured Magento hosting and VPS server provides.
In a shared hosting environment Magento often becomes slow, can turn unstable under load, and cannot take advantage of the technologies (caching, search engine, background processes) that deliver real performance. On a VPS, however, you get full control over the system, so the webshop can be tailored precisely to your business needs.

What does a well-configured Magento VPS give you?

  • Fast page loads even under heavy traffic
  • Stable operation during sales, campaigns and seasonal peaks
  • Scalable resources (RAM, CPU, storage)
  • PHP, database and cache layers optimised for Magento
  • More secure operation in an isolated environment
A well-built VPS infrastructure makes a Magento webshop not only faster, but dependable enough to run a business on.

What makes us strong at Magento VPS configuration?

For Magento webshops we do not use off-the-shelf server templates. Every VPS is tailored to the specific webshop: we take into account the number of products, traffic, integrations and future growth.

We have experience in:

  • Magento 2 server-side performance optimisation
  • Fine-tuning caching and background processes
  • Building stable VPS environments that stay maintainable in the long term
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting on live webshops

The goal is not just to get the webshop “up and running”, but for it to run reliably for years, without the server ever holding back growth.

Magento 2 versions and support lifecycle

Adobe provides a three-year standard support window for every major release, counted from its release date. Security and quality patches arrive during this period – after that the system still runs, but with known, unpatched security vulnerabilities.

Latest

End of support: April 2027
Expiring soon
2.4.6
End of support: 11 August 2026

2.4.5 and earlier
No longer receives security patches – upgrade recommended

What does this mean for a webshop owner?

If your store runs on 2.4.6 or older, support ends within days or has already ended. This does not mean an immediate shutdown, but it does mean that security vulnerabilities discovered from now on remain unpatched, and the risk grows on the payment provider and PCI compliance side as well. A major version upgrade is planned work: it is carried out in a staging environment, with compatibility checks for every module, and typically takes a few days – as opposed to a much more expensive rebuild of a neglected system later on.

System requirements for the current versions

ComponentRecommended version

DatabaseMySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 11.4
Search engineOpenSearch 3
CacheValkey 8, Varnish 7.7

These are not optional add-ons: Magento 2 is built on these components, and keeping them up to date is the responsibility of the webshop operator, not of Adobe. A maintenance package takes exactly this tracking off the business's shoulders.

Version data checked: 7 August 2026. Lifecycle dates are set by Adobe's official software lifecycle policy.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Everything worth knowing about a Magento 2 webshop: cost, timeline, choosing a platform, server requirements, Hungarian invoicing, migration, choosing a developer and speed optimisation.

Prices and timelines

How much does Magento 2 webshop development cost?

+

A Magento 2 webshop implementation costs between €5,000 and €170,000 net. A shop built on standard foundations with a customised off-the-shelf theme costs €5,000 – €17,000, a webshop with a bespoke design or migrated from another system €17,000 – €50,000, while a complex B2B or multistore system starts at €50,000. The price is driven by the number of products, the volume of data to migrate and the number of integrations, not by the design. Every project is based on an individual assessment.

How long does a Magento 2 webshop implementation take?

+

A Magento 2 webshop built on standard foundations is up and running in 3–9 weeks, a bespoke implementation or migration takes 9–20 weeks, and a complex B2B or multistore system 3–9 months. The timeline is most often stretched not by development but by data migration and the integration of external systems (invoicing software, ERP, courier service).

How much does Magento 2 maintenance cost per month?

+

Ongoing Magento 2 maintenance typically costs between €170 and €3,000 net per month. The lower band covers security patches, backup checks and monitoring, the middle band adds version upgrades and priority bug fixing, and the upper band also includes a monthly development allowance and a quarterly technical audit.

Choosing a platform

Magento 2 or WooCommerce – which should I choose?

+

WooCommerce is suited to smaller, simpler webshops: it launches faster and at lower cost, and works very well up to a few hundred products and moderate traffic. Magento 2 comes out ahead where thousands of products, multiple warehouses, multiple languages or currencies, complex pricing and B2B permission management are required. The practical threshold is roughly the point where WooCommerce can only keep working by piling up extensions.

Magento 2 or Shoprenter and Unas – when is it worth switching?

+

Hungarian SaaS webshop platforms (Shoprenter, Unas) offer a quick launch and low running costs, but development freedom is limited: business logic the platform does not support cannot be implemented. Switching to Magento 2 makes sense when the goal is a custom checkout, your own business logic, an ERP connection, multiple stores or international sales, or when the platform's limitations are already costing you revenue.

What is the difference between Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce?

+

Magento Open Source is the free, open-source edition – no licence fee, but you bear the cost of development, the server and maintenance. Adobe Commerce is the paid edition with an annual licence fee, offering a built-in B2B module, content staging, advanced segmentation and vendor support. For the vast majority of Hungarian small and medium-sized businesses, the Open Source edition is sufficient.

Technical questions

What kind of server does a Magento 2 webshop need?

+

Magento 2 does not run reliably on shared hosting – it needs a dedicated VPS or server. For a new webshop, 4 CPU cores, 8–16 GB of RAM and SSD/NVMe storage are the sensible minimum, together with a Varnish cache, Redis for session and cache handling, and an OpenSearch or Elasticsearch search engine. With a larger catalogue and high traffic, these resources scale up proportionally.

How many products can Magento 2 handle?

+

In the right server environment, Magento 2 reliably handles hundreds of thousands of products. The practical limit is not the number of products but the volume of attributes and variants, the indexing strategy and the search engine configuration. Above 10,000 products, OpenSearch or Elasticsearch based search, Varnish caching and scheduled indexing are worth using.

How long is Magento 2 supported, and what happens after that?

+

Magento 2 is developed and supported by Adobe, with regular security and feature releases. Keeping up with new versions is not optional: outdated versions run with known security vulnerabilities, and PHP compatibility becomes limited as well. A well-maintained Magento 2 system runs for years without a major rebuild – which is precisely its main advantage over SaaS platforms.

Hungarian specifics and migration

Does Magento 2 support Hungarian invoicing and the NAV Online Számla system?

+

Yes. The Magento 2 core does not include Hungarian invoicing, but Hungarian invoicing software (for example Számlázz.hu or Billingo) can be connected via API, and invoice data reporting to NAV Online Számla (the Hungarian tax authority's system) then happens automatically through it. VAT rates, reverse charge and intra-EU sales can be configured in Magento's tax rule system.

Which payment and shipping providers can be integrated in Hungary?

+

On the payment side, Barion, SimplePay, Stripe and PayPal are the most common choices, and each has a Magento 2 module or a custom integration. For shipping, GLS, FoxPost and MPL can be integrated with automatic label printing and a pick-up point selector, and custom shipping logic (weight limits, free shipping threshold, zones) can also be implemented.

How do you migrate from WooCommerce or Shoprenter to Magento 2?

+

Migration has three stages: extracting and cleansing data from the old system, mapping it to the Magento data model (products, variants, categories, customers, orders), then importing and verification. Most of the work usually lies not in the import but in tidying up the old database. Old URLs must be preserved with 301 redirects, otherwise the search rankings you have earned are lost.

Choosing a Magento 2 developer and working together

How much does a Magento 2 developer cost?

+

Magento 2 development is best planned per project or on a monthly allowance, not at an hourly list rate. A full implementation costs between €5,000 and €170,000 net depending on complexity, while ongoing development and maintenance are usually covered by a monthly framework agreement. Magento developer hourly rates are considerably higher than WordPress market rates, because the system demands deeper PHP, data model and operations expertise. Every project is based on an individual assessment and agreement.

How should I choose a Magento 2 developer?

+

Four things are worth asking. One: whether they have live Magento 2 webshops they can show as references, not just WooCommerce projects. Two: how they handle version upgrades – where the core files have been modified, the next upgrade grinds to a halt. Three: who runs the server, and what happens during a night-time outage. Four: who owns the code and the documentation if the partnership ends. If there is no clear answer to these, the project will cost more later.

Can you take over our existing Magento webshop from another developer?

+

Yes, this is a common task. A takeover starts with a technical audit: we review the Magento version, the installed and custom modules, core modifications, the server environment and the backup regime. From this we produce a risk list and a prioritised plan – what needs fixing immediately and what can wait. Even with an inherited, undocumented codebase, further deterioration can be stopped; it just has to be scheduled realistically.

How is building a Magento webshop different from a template-based webshop?

+

With a template-based or SaaS system, the platform dictates what is possible: business logic beyond its configuration options cannot be implemented. When building a Magento webshop, the situation is reversed – the system adapts to your business processes, not vice versa. The price is a higher entry cost and the need for a dedicated server, but in return bespoke pricing, B2B permission management, your own checkout and deep ERP integration all become possible.

Operations, speed and marketing

My Magento 2 webshop is slow – what can be done about it?

+

Slowness rarely comes down to a single cause. The most common factors are a missing or misconfigured Varnish cache, session handling without Redis, database search instead of OpenSearch or Elasticsearch, unoptimised images, too many third-party modules installed, and a live system left in developer mode. The fix starts with measurement: profiling shows whether the bottleneck is on the server, in the application or in the frontend.

How SEO-friendly is Magento 2?

+

Out of the box, Magento 2 provides a strong SEO toolkit: custom URL keys, canonical handling, meta templates, structured data and sitemap generation. In practice, problems are usually caused not by the system itself but by duplicate URLs generated by layered navigation, slow category pages and missing product descriptions. These can be handled through configuration and content work, while improving Core Web Vitals comes down to server-side caching.

Can Árukereső and Google Shopping be connected to Magento 2?

+

Yes. Magento 2 can generate product feeds for Árukereső and Árgép (Hungarian price comparison sites), Google Merchant Center and the Meta catalogue, with custom field mapping, category matching and scheduled updates. For measurement, GA4 e-commerce event tracking and the server-side Measurement Protocol can also be connected, which noticeably improves the accuracy of ad conversion data.

Is Magento 2 available in Hungarian?

+

Yes, Magento 2 is a multilingual system, and with a Hungarian language pack both the storefront and the admin panel can be translated into Hungarian. The community translation is incomplete, so on live projects we usually refine missing and mistranslated strings in a custom language file – especially the checkout and order e-mail texts, because these have a direct impact on conversion.

What is the Hyvä theme, and is it worth using?

+

Hyvä is a modern frontend layer that replaces Magento's default Luma theme: the heavy Knockout and RequireJS stack is replaced by Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS, which delivers considerably better Core Web Vitals scores and faster development. It carries a licence fee, and the frontend of existing third-party modules often has to be ported to it. For a new Magento 2 webshop it is almost always worth it; for an existing shop it is a matter of weighing up the pros and cons.

Entity-Attribute-Value: Magento's data model, in which product properties are stored not in fixed columns but as freely extensible attributes. This is what makes the system flexible, and it is also why it needs a more powerful server.

Indexer

Magento collects prices, stock levels and category assignments into pre-calculated tables so that the store responds quickly. With a large catalogue, indexing runs on a schedule, otherwise every change causes a slowdown.

Cron

The engine behind scheduled background tasks: indexing, sending emails, activating promotions, generating feeds. If cron is not running, the store appears to work, but a lot of things quietly fail to happen.

Varnish

A full-page cache in front of the web server. The vast majority of visitors receive a ready-made, stored page, so PHP and the database are not loaded at all. For Magento 2 it is practically a must.

Redis and Valkey

In-memory caches for handling sessions and the internal cache. Valkey is the open-source fork that carries Redis forward, and newer Magento versions recommend it.

OpenSearch and Elasticsearch

The engine behind store search and filters (layered navigation). Magento 2 does not work without a separate search engine: newer versions are built on OpenSearch by default, while Elasticsearch is still supported and older stores typically run on it.

Multi-Source Inventory (MSI)

Managing the stock of several warehouses or pick-up points together. You can define which source fulfils an order – a key element when a physical shop and a webshop run side by side.

Staging and preview

Preparing and previewing scheduled content and price changes before they go live. A built-in feature of the Adobe Commerce edition; on Open Source it can be replicated with a custom solution.

Attribute set

A bundle of properties put together per product type – size and colour for a shoe, author and ISBN for a book. Without well-built attribute sets, filters and search are unusable.

Hyvä

An alternative, significantly faster Magento frontend layer that replaces the built-in Luma theme. It comes into play when Core Web Vitals scores matter most.

Composer

The PHP package manager used to install and update Magento and all of its modules. It is the standard route instead of copying modules by hand, and it is what makes the composition of the system traceable.

Core Web Vitals

Google's three user experience metrics: LCP (when the main content appears), CLS (how much the page jumps around) and INP (how quickly it responds to a click). For a webshop they are directly linked to conversion.
